Volunteers are involved in a variety of both short and long-term projects at the Human Rights Documentation Exchange. We strive to assure that volunteers are doing work that is both enjoyable and fulfilling, while at the same time assisting in completing projects which are in immediate need of assistance. Currently our list of volunteer projects includes:
Women's Asylum/Battered Immigrant Women's Documentation Project
The goal of this project is to develop country-specific information related to the persecution of women worldwide. Volunteers organize and file information that has been gathered; maintain the bibliographies for each country; & do outreach.
Preferred: Strong organizational and word processing skills.
Translators for Worldwide and NACARA Packets
Volunteers research Spanish language articles from various newspapers on the internet and translate these articles into English. The translated articles are included in our NACARA packets for El Salvador and Guatemala and in the Cancellation packet for Mexico.
Preferred: Experience translating from Spanish to English; knowledge/interest in current events in Mexico and Central America, access to the internet and e-mail.
Library
Volunteers assist the HRDE librarian in organizing and maintaining our library collection. Responsibilities may include cataloging and filing periodicals and collection inventory and development. Preferred: Previous library experience, attention to detail.
General Support
Volunteers work on a number of different tasks including clipping relevant articles from newspapers, filing, photocopying, special temporary projects like mass mailings, and any other project for which we could use some help.
